I've seen in supermarket trolley, on the kitchen bench fruit bowl and even a metal cutout on the front door

Bahahah
Not to mention the front of a pineapple lump bag either
But it’s generally not upside down or a recognition of swinging

A bit of Google-fu found a few references to this practice, for example on Urban Dictionary. Whether or not this would catch on here is another story.

A pineapple that is turned upside down is when there is someone looking for a swinger party. Swingers also use the symbol to look for each other in public. It is also said that a pineapple left on your front door in the middle of the night is an invitation to join the swingers.
