Is it rude?
Discussion - started by Firedace, posted on 26-Sep-25 8:55AM
I was wondering on what ppl think. Is it rude to ask for help with travel when going to meet someone?

I think it depends on a mutual arrangement between both sides

I dont think its rude to ask so long as there is a mutual understanding of whether there will be some kind of reimbursement

Absolutely not I think it's fair that travel costs get shared

Travel expenses need to be allowed for in any case, if your situation requires some funding, then if upfront about it and genuine then I don’t see a problem with it, especially if someone is receiving some delicious reward for you to be travelling for their mutual pleasure. Not everyone is loaded with cash these days.

I think it should be a "shared responsibility", re; "costs"?
I am happy to travel.

I don't think it is rude to ask so long as its not the beginning of a long list of can I, can you, do you, have you of expectations.

There are a few caveats that I see, asking for help to travel and not using said help to travel to agreed destination is a red flag and can be viewed unfavourably.

Or asking for financial support to be told no.

Meeting half way suggests that both make the time and effort into meeting. That way its an even playing field.

Totally agree, and context matters too. An opening message to someone offering an immediate meet but requesting financial help is a pretty big red flag IMO, but covering costs after you've established a rapport is a lot different.

I have helped in travel cost before for them to come over and they never show and then ask for more money. Never again. I have also offered to drive to them without me asking for money or me asking to meet halfway and then ghost me. I do find it rude to ask for money, if you want to meet, it's your responsibility to find away to meet up with that person as I find away myself to meet up with someone without asking for money. If you got no money to meet up then don't go...

I do agree with your statement why should you pay for them to meet up

Rather than a yes/no, I'd just phrase my answer as:

The person doing the travelling pays travel costs, the person not travelling provides accom in some form, and if they are hosting, then a meal or activity or whatever.

==
If both are travelling just split travel/accom.

I only ask as I don't have financial independence and and explaining why I suddenly had to spend a lot on petrol will be questioned. Getting around the central city and central suburbs isn't to much of a hassle but going over the highway can raise red flags... Make of that as you will.
It would be Handy if there was some kind of rating system on porfiles. Or maybe there is I'm new to this so don't really know

I also don't like the idea of going in starngers car beacuse if things go bad I could be trapped and I'm not able to host. I wouldn't mind meeting up halfway if I can as long as they don't expect to have sex in a car as you can't really relax in a car and take your time having fun. I am a bam but not a wham bam

Im also around the central city and it can be a pain making short trips over the highway to meet others

If someone has spent money on helping you to meet, what do you hope to achieve and anticipate that person wanting in return? Youve added a criteria there, not going into a strangers car, not being able to host, meeting halfway without expectation. I ask, what kind of rating system are you looking for? A stipulation like have money will pay to meet? Happy to travel to specific destinations?

I'm porbly abit naive but I was thinking more along the lines of a honesty rating like how some sites rate ppls reply percentages maybe there could be something like a person's rate of showing up to a meet up ( did they show or not what happens afterwards is between them.) kinda thing. As after reading some comments I think it could cut down on scammers.

Good idea, as there are a lot of "Ghosters" on here, that make plans but never follow through?
Then there is the good ones also.
