Wellington to Auckland drive, sneaky spots?

Next month we're doing a Wellington to Auckland drive on a Saturday. Anyone know of any good spots for stopping for a bit of action? Going the whole journey without any seems a long way!

On the way out of the desert road taupo side, kaimanawa rd provides access to the rangipo power station on the tongariro river, in fact the whole area in there is very scenic with a couple of bridges with really good views, and there is quite a bit a lot of very private places to pull up and do, well whatever you want really...
